Keep Pets in Apartments

Buy and Sell text links

Despite the indisputable benefits of having a pet around, prospective pet owners need to consider a number of issues from the animal’s point of view before they commit to a furry friend, particularly a long-lived one like a cat or dog. Many people fail to think about the practical aspects of life with a pet before they take a trip to the pet store or the Humane Society. In some cases, this lack of foresight can result in unhappy pets and unhappy owners if the situation isn’t well suited to both parties. This danger is particularly acute for those who live in apartments.

Many apartment buildings have restrictions on the type or number of pets that tenants are allowed to keep. Most commonly, apartment dwellers can have cage-bound pets such as fish, small reptiles, or small birds, but are forbidden from having cats and dogs. Although this might appear to be a selfish move on the part of the apartment managers, there are other, very sensible reasons for this type of regulation. Not only does it save money on cleaning and repairs when tenants move out, it also prevents serious problems that can arise if pets escape. Because apartment and condos are characterized by a high resident density, an escaped dog can be a real threat to neighboring children or individuals with allergies.

Considering neighbors isn’t the only reason to think twice before inviting a dog or cat into your apartment. Consideration should also be given to the animals themselves. Unfortunately, such inter-species empathy is fairly rare. Many people think about the benefits they themselves will receive from having a pet, never dwelling on how their individual living situations will affect the pet. If you live in an urban area of a large city, you have probably seen apartment-dwellers walking their dogs around the local park. In some unfortunate cases, this could be the only exercise the dog gets, having to spend the rest of its time cooped up in a small apartment where it’s unable to engage in the level of physical activity it needs to stay healthy. How to Keep Your Dog From Chewing Everything?

Buy and Sell text links

Stopping your dog from chewing on everything requires a lot of patience, supervision and attention. Remember, the only reason why your dog is chewing on everything that is coming his way is because he wants to know what it is. Or may be because he is teething and the chewing helps him feel better. So the first and foremost step would be to know the reason. Give him a lot of time. Make sure you play a lot with your dog and spend some quality time everyday to train him. If you think teething or some dental problem could be the reason behind his chewing, then you must consult your vet as soon as possible. Nevertheless, below mentioned are some effective tips on how to stop your dog from chewing on wood, shoes, furniture books and everything that comes its way.

Get him Toys to Chew On!
Get him lots of chewable toys from the store. These toys are specially designed to cater to their chewing needs when they are teething or just for having some ‘dog fun’! There are specialized dog toys for aggressive chewers like hard bones, rubber toys etc that can divert their attention from your regular stuff.

Don’t Give Him the Old Stuff
Do not give him your old socks or shoes to chew on as he won’t be able to distinguish the new and the old. He would just recognize your scent and will end up chewing on anything that seems appealing to him, even your brand new shoes!

Keep Things out of His Reach!
Keep things out of the dog’s way. It is as simple as that. Imagine if you were a dog and wanted to go out and explore your new house, and you see shoes lying on the way that smell so appealing, there are socks, slippers, books, tasty wooden furniture, wouldn’t you want to chew on them all? So store all your chewable things properly and keep them out of the dog’s way. Just give him plenty of toys to chew on, nothing else.

What About the Furniture?
I mean you can’t pick up the sofa and the table and store it in the closet, can you? Well, there is a way to stop your dog from chewing on those things as well. Get a bitter tasting spray, which could be a bitter apple spray, vinegar spray, or even alcohol. First, test it on a safe spot on the furniture if it causes damage to the finishing. Once you are sure it’s ok, go ahead and apply this spray on the furniture so that every time your dog puts his mouth on it, the bitter taste prevents him from going further.

Be Polite and Appreciative
Ok, what would you do if your dog gets hold of your favorite slipper and won’t just let it go. Would you scold your dog, or pull the slipper from his mouth? Well, pulling things didn’t really go well with my dog as the more I pulled, the more he would tighten the grip. So, I applied the barter system! Now every time my dog manages to get a hold on my slippers, I just go inside, get her chewable toy, probably rub it with some peanut butter and offer it to her. The moment the peanut butter attracts her, she drops the slippers and I say, ‘Thank you baby!’ Read the rest of this entry »

Hummingbird Feeder Nectar Recipe

Buy and Sell text links

A lot of instant hummingbird food mixtures are available in pet stores. However, not all of these are healthy for hummingbirds, particularly if they contain a red dye. Hummingbirds are known to be attracted to the color red more than others, which is why these mixtures contain the dye. However, this dye can be very harmful for these birds as it is toxic when consumed in large amounts. This is why it is safest to prepare a hummingbird feeder food recipe at home rather than buying it outside. The process is so simple that you will never consider buying the mix from outside. It is also known to taste like the nectar that is found in flowers that hummingbirds enjoy. Take a look at what needs to be done to prepare it.
•Keep at hand 4 parts water and 1 part sugar. For instance, you could take 1 cup of water and ¼ cup of sugar.
•Mix the two in a saucepan and bring the solution to a boil.
•Allow it to cool. Once cool, pour it in the hummingbird feeder. It can now be enjoyed by the hummingbirds.
And that’s how simple it is to prepare hummingbird nectar. Now it may be very easy, but there are a lot of important things you should keep in mind when feeding hummingbirds using this hummingbird feeder nectar recipe.

The water you use to prepare the hummingbird feeder recipe should be tap water. Do not use distilled water as a lot of important nutrients are lost out in the process, nutrients that are essential to keep the birds healthy. Further, ensure that the sugar you use is also clean. Sugar is what keeps the birds so active and humming, which is why it is important that it is clean. Do not overdo the sugar and follow the aforementioned ratio when making the hummingbird feeder sugar water recipe. A lot of people tend to substitute the sugar for honey or molasses. However, that is not such a great idea, and white table sugar is perfect to create the solution. Honey is known to ferment easily and can spoil the nectar quicker than necessary, and can prove harmful to the birds. It is also important to remember the amount you put in the feeder. The hummingbird food recipe amount should be no more than enough to last for two days. Else the nectar can start developing mold and prove harmful for the birds.

Apart from ensuring that the hummingbird nectar recipe is not contaminated, it is also important to ensure that the feeder you put it in is clean. An unclean feeder is as dangerous as contaminated nectar. Clean the feeder every time you change the nectar. If the nectar appears cloudy do not allow the birds to drink it, no matter how recently you have prepared it. Clean the feeders with hot water and a minimal amount of vinegar to clean out any mold and keep the feeder fresh. Make sure that the smell of vinegar does not linger when you pour in the nectar. Place the nectar in red feeders to attract more hummingbirds. If you want more of these birds to grace your garden, place multiple feeders at different levels out there, as some birds prefer to find their food lower while others prefer to find it higher.

Preparing the hummingbird feeder recipe is indeed very easy, as is maintaining the feeders and keeping the birds coming. Keep this recipe at hand and you will find that your garden is graced with the bounty of numerous hummingbirds.
