     The okapi (plural okapis) is one of the most beautiful animal species, characterized by striped markings in the backside and legs. Giving due importance to the physical appearance of okapi, it is thought to be a relative genus of giraffe and zebra. Previously, when people saw only the back portion, they believed that okapis were a different version of zebra, residing in rainforest. Later, studies conducted on the skull parts led to the conclusion that this mysterious animal is more closely related to giraffe. Let’s take a look at some astonishing okapi facts.

     Okapis are commonly known as forest giraffes. Excavators have found carved images of okapis in Egypt, thus concluding that these mazing animals were known to the ancient Egyptians. However, okapi is discovered lately, only in the early 20th century. Refer to the following information in order to understand more on okapi:

     Okapi Classification: Okapi is a mammal, categorized under the order Artiodactyla. Relative to giraffes, it’s family is Giraffidae. The genus name is Okapia, while species name is johnstoni in honor of its discoverer, Henry Morton Stanley (British governor of Uganda).
